Meet the Family
From Sketch to Final Art…
On Tuesday, December 6th, Wembly the Pug will be introduced to the world! Over the past several weeks I have had many people ask me questions about how I created each character. So, I thought I would take a moment to share with you the creative process of taking this wonderful family from idea to sketch to final art.
Once I completed my manuscript, it was important that I chose an illustrator who could make my vision for Wembly and his family come to life. Fortunately, I found Antonella Fant, my amazing illustration, who helped to accomplish this task.
After sharing with her the manuscript of my story, character descriptions, along with images of what I imagined each family member could look like, one of the first things Antonella did was to provide me with a series preliminary sketches for each character.
Here are the FIRST SKETCHES that I received…
Antonella offered multiple versions of each character for me to choose from. I proceeded to give her detailed descriptions and feedback on the sketches for each character. To give you an idea of my process to choosing a character, here is a sample of the feedback I shared with Antonella about Wembly…
“…Here are some ideas / thoughts about how we can combine several elements from each of the current Wembly illustrations to create one amazing illustration. I gravitate to #2, #3, & #6 as those seem the most youthful. Below is a breakdown of specific body parts.
Eyes: #3 & #5 – I like the big eyes, it helps him look more youthful. Tail: #2 & #6 – You’ll notice it doesn’t completely curl and it curls up. Body: #2 & #6 – I would like a little more space between the ground and his belly. Ears: #2 & #6 – His ears are the softest little things Nose: #3 & #6 – The little button nose seems super cute Face: #2 & #3 – I like that his whole mouth is covered in grey. Energy: #2, #3, & #6 – I enjoy the youthful energy of these images."
I did the same for each character, grabbing elements from each sketch to try and combine the best parts of each sketch to create the ideal illustration.
The below “Line Up” is the result of my feedback…
This next round of feedback was fairly easy as, I believed that Antonella made the necessary edits to each character. While the rest of the family was looking good, Wembly still needed a bit of work. I chose to go with the Wembly on the right because he seemed to best represent the energy I was envisioning Wembly would have. SUCCESS!! I have my family
Below is the Final Art that will be included in the story. Meet the Family…
