My Top 5 Children’s Picture Books: New Sibling Edition

With my newest book, The Adventures of Wembly the Pug: Wembly Gets a New Sister coming out this year, I thought it might be fun to share with you some other great children’s books that focus on the concerns and experiences of older siblings at the arrival of their new siblings. I wrote Wembly Gets a New Sister because I tried to imagine what my oldest stepson was feeling when he got the news that he was going to be a big brother. Turns out there are specific ways to help your children prepare for the arrival of a new baby brother or sister and the following children’s picture books address that subject.

Note: All reviews mentioned in this book can be found on the corresponding Amazon link to each book.

The New Baby

Mercer Mayer’s Little Critter has a brand-new baby sister in this classic, funny, and heartwarming book! Whether he’s rocking her to sleep, helping change diapers, or pushing the stroller, both parents and children alike will relate to this beloved story. The New Baby is the perfect book to help a soon-to-be older sibling welcome a younger one!

Little Miss, Big Sis Board Book

The perfect picture book for children expecting a new sibling, from the beloved New York Times bestselling author of Dear Girl, I Wish You More, and Yes Day, Amy Krouse Rosenthal. The big news is this: Little Miss becomes a big sis! Little Miss learns the wonders of becoming a big sister as she and her family celebrate the momentous arrival of a new baby. A perfect gift for any child becoming a big brother or sister and any expecting families!

Babies Ruin Everything

Meet the baby who ruins everything, and the big sister who learns to love him. Babies Ruin Everything is about a spunky little girl who thinks her new baby brother is ruining EVERYTHING: wrecking her room, drooling all over her toys, and throwing a wrench in her birthday party plans. But when she opens her heart, this big sister realizes she might be the real problem-the baby's just a baby, after all. Maybe all he needs is a better big sister. Together, they make this laugh out loud picture book the perfect gift for new siblings and baby showers!

What’s in Your Tummy Mummy?

There’s something inside Mummy’s tummy. I don’t know what it could be. Perhaps it’s a buzzing flea or a chimpanzee? It’s getting bigger every day and Mummy won’t tell me. But you can lift the flaps to see! What’s in Your Tummy Mummy? is a wonderful and fun story for young children about a new addition to the family from much-loved author and illustrator Sam Lloyd.

Big Brother Peanut Butter

Peanut Butter's mom has a bun in the oven, and Peanut Butter is going to be a big brother! He's pretty excited, but also a little bit scared. Just what does a big brother do? Luckily, Peanut Butter has just the right friends to ask. Apple Pie has two little brothers, Blueberry and Cherry, and she makes it look easy. Cucumber is definitely a cool older sibling to little Dill Pickle. And Big Cheese is clearly an important friend to ask. But do any of them know how to teach Peanut Butter what to do? Will any of them be able to help him crack this nut? In his book, Big Brother Peanut Butter, Terry Border brings back everyone's favorite slice of bread in his latest food- and fun-filled book, which celebrates siblinghood in all forms, whether crunchy, smooth, or anywhere in between.

This post is for all the big brothers, big sisters, and the parents who want to help their children to cope with and get excited about the arrival of their new siblings!!

Oh, and don’t forget to add The Adventures of Wembly the Pug: Wembly Gets a New Sister to your list too. ;)
