Creating an Illustrated Character: Sketch to Final Art

One of my greatest joys as a children’s book author is witnessing the characters I envision in my writing come to life through beautiful illustrations. Throughout the creation of my first book, "The Adventures of Wembly the Pug: Wembly’s First Day of School," seeing my vision of Wembly and his family materialize was truly fulfilling. Collaborating with the incredibly talented Illustrator, Antonella Fant, was a highlight of the process.

The excitement of seeing my imagination take shape continued with my latest book, "Wembly Gets a New Sister." Each character in this adventure series has a unique journey from initial sketch to final artwork. It's an incredible experience to witness the evolution of these characters in each new book. I hope you enjoy!

Initial Sketches & Feedback

After reviewing my manuscript, my illustrator has crafted the first set of illustrations for the new characters. Each sketch is meticulously examined, and I offer detailed feedback on areas that may require adjustments. This collaborative process involves providing clear guidance, sometimes supplemented with visual references, to ensure the characters come to life as envisioned.

Second Attempt & More Feedback

Once my illustrator receives my feedback, she has the ability to incorporate feedback and enhance the illustrations how she sees fit. In the sketches below you’ll see Grandpup now sports glasses and a hat, Gram Gram flaunts a longer scarf and multicolored eyes, while Ruby Mae (Roo) remained perfect as is. I love them!

FINAL ARTWORK

Once all feedback has been offered and approval of the character has been given, it is time to produce the final artwork that will be used in the book. Below is the final art that was determined for all three of our new characters.

I can’t wait for you all to see these new characters in my second book in these amazing adventures of Wembly the Pug! Be on the lookout via social for more detailed introductions to each of these wonderful characters.
